Whilst Nova is trying to be more ethnically diverse, the reliance on Defence consulting and therefore the need for a security clearance means that pretty much all employees have to be Australian citizens.

Great effort towards diversity. Marked effort to hire from diverse backgrounds provided the candidates are appropriate

From my time at Nova Systems, I have met many female role models and come into contact with people from various backgrounds which is refreshing, and not to mention important to capture the benefits of having diverse teams working on projects. I am now working with two female graduates with both engineering and mathematical sciences background. Nova is committed to employing people to fill skills gaps and be ready for the future shape of industries to come in an unbiased and inclusive manner. The engineering fields traditionally have been male dominated. There are many older and experienced male engineers working at Nova which is to be expected. I have been impressed however with the level of interaction between senior employees and younger additions to the team. There is a great deal of learning to go both ways, and Nova graduate coordinators and keenly aware of this challenge as the company matures and adopts an increasingly more inclusive place for graduates.

We have a formal committee called IDEAL which is dedicated to finding diversity opportunities including networking events, social activities etc. Those on maternity leave are welcome to come into the office with their children and say hello while they are away. There are a number of break rooms including one with a couch which breastfeeding mothers can use, or to nap on etc.

What does your company do to attract applicants from less privileged backgrounds?
I am unsure that Nova Systems specifically makes sure to include potential candidates from less privileged backgrounds through their recruitment program. There are initiatives in the works to engage more on a university level.
