The good bits: Learning a highly marketable skill and getting paid to do so
The not so good bits: You’re locked into a contract

The Data School Australia story

The Data School Australia, blurs the line between training college and employer. It offers a 28-month, fixed-term contract. At no cost to themselves, grads spend four months being trained up in Tableau and Alteryx and a further 24 months employed by the Data School. (Though the Data School will pay your wages, you’ll be sent to work at organisations across a range of industries. Placements have included Lendlease, Optus, WPP,  AFCX).

The Data School UK opened in mid-2015. Given its success, the Data School Australia was opened in mid-2018. The Data School partners with Tableau and Alteryx to create new data experts in their technology stacks.

The culture

While the Data School doesn’t appear to have an official diversity policy, its application process is merit-based. While skewing young, both staff and students appear to be from a range of educational, ethnic and national backgrounds. Unusually for IT education institutions and employers, women seem to be well represented at the Data School.

The recruitment process

The Data School Australia is located in Sydney and Melbourne. They have three intakes per year each. In Sydney, the starting dates are in April, August and November. In Melbourne, the starting dates are in February, June, October.

The Data School do things differently and they're proud of it. So forget about the application process you might be used to.

Here’s how the process works:

  • Join Tableau – Join the community and download Tableau Public by creating a new account.
  • Get inspired – Check out Tableau Public Gallery, there are brilliant examples for you to look at and research.
  • Find your data – Choose any data set you want! They mean it; from politics to sport, TV and popular culture. Tableau provide many data sets on their resources page.
  • Create your Viz – Now the fun begins! Once you have your data set, you can begin creating your winning viz!
  • Share it with them – Once your work is live on Tableau Public, send it to them!
  • The Interview – If you impress them with your passion, innovation and understanding of data, you will be invited to an interview with the Head Coach.

The Data School are taking applications for places at all times. If you share the same inquisitive nature, have a passion for getting to the truth by way of data they’d love to hear from you!

Remuneration

The Data School pays employees $56,400 during their first year that will rise over the placement period. There are no upfront fees or HECS debts to worry about. You’ll get the training and industry experience that is virtually guaranteed to lead to a lucrative career as a data analyst, data scientist or data consultant.

Career prospects

Once your 28-month contract has been completed, Data Schoolers are likely to have the option of remaining employed at The Data School or work as consultants at MIP (MIP is the partner consulting organisation that provides the trainer and client backbone to The Data School).

Alternatively, you can hang out your shingle as an IT consultant or find a full-time job in one of the burgeoning number of blue-chip corporations that use Tableau and Alteryx.

In the era of Big Data, Data School alumni seem well-placed to enjoy well-paid and exciting careers.

The vibe of the place

The Data School is a place where passionate trainers teach motivated students. That means you can expect a buzzy atmosphere, as well as classrooms and work placements where you will be encouraged to reach your full potential. The company puts on regular social events and has a happy hour every Friday after the completion of a successful project week.

Star Rating: 4.7 out of 5

What Graduates Say About Them
  • You get to help people reach their potential.
  • Support and learning opportunities.
  • Professional development - we are encouraged and given time to learn new things and pursue our passion
  • Where to start! The Data School is truly a company of its time: with a horizontal management structure, a culture rooted in knowledge sharing and learning, and a focus on making each of its employees an evangelist in the tools we use, everybody feels both valued and useful. If I had to pick one, however, I would have to say that the opportunities for growth and the general feeling that the company will do everything it can to prepare you for the future is what makes me love going to work every day.
  • It can feel a bit intense sometimes when there is a lot going on. But that's a tonne better than being bored I guess.
  • I don't get to see my coworkers as often as I would like.
  • Beer culture - drinking occurs every week which might put people that do not consume alcohol off.
  • I have to say that there really isn't much I don't enjoy about the company. There is a natural caveat to having a horizontally organized company, where everybody is a consultant working either from home or directly with clients: you have to put in the time to make sure you meet everyone and build ties with your mentors. However, I have found that I spend far more time with my colleagues relative to my friends who work in more traditional companies - a fact that shows how tightly knit we are.
  • Small growing business so lack of process for certain things.
