You’ll learn amazing technical skills and people skills in the Xero grad program. So whether you know how you want your career to develop, or whether you want to explore your options, we’ll help you get there.

The Xero grad program is your way into a global company with a start-up mentality. Start your career with others in the same boat, have the support of a structured program, and be mentored by the best in the industry.

The Xero grad program

Shape your career with the Xero grad program. We know what it takes to help you do the best work of your life and we’ll invest in you to help you get there.

You’ll start your career with a close-knit group of grads giving you instant connections around the business. We’ll hook you up a buddy and you’ll work closely with your manager to create a career development plan.

Our grad program starts in February and runs for 12 months. After the program, you are guaranteed a permanent position, inline with your career aspirations.

Working with us

For our 2022 grad program, we’re looking for engineers, data specialists, designers and marketing and sales graduates.

Our grad program is run in Melbourne and Canberra. No matter which office you’re in, you'll have bottomless coffee, free fruit, a flexible work environment and amazing teammates.

Take ownership of your career

Join Xero and we'll work together to find out what it is that makes you tick, and how your career can flourish.

We hire grads and interns from a diverse range of backgrounds, from those straight out of uni to those who already have a few careers under their belt. Check out our videos to hear from some of our past and current grads to find out where they started, where they are now, and how Xero helped them get there.

The Xero Internship Program

With the Xero internship program, you’ll spend the summer learning new skills and experiencing what life is like in a bustling tech company.

You'll be placed in a team that aligns to the area you have applied for. You will be involved in our daily work and have the opportunity to make real meaningful contributions.

We’ll help you develop your technical skills and your soft skills, whilst gaining valuable experience. By the end of the internship, you’ll hopefully have a good idea of where you want your career to go.

The Xero intern program is aimed at students in their penultimate year of study. For students in their final year, check out our grad program.

Diversity at Xero

Xero champions diversity and inclusion to create better outcomes for our people and our customers.
We acknowledge, respect and celebrate all the ways our staff are different and we create an inclusive culture so we can really tap into the power of our differences.

In 2018, Xero NZ was awarded the Rainbow Tick, a diversity and inclusion award that formally recognises us as a safe and inclusive workplace for the LGBTIQ+ community.

Our approach to diversity and inclusion is summed up in our key principles:

  • We value diversity because it reflects and serves our customers and ensures our people thrive.
  • We’re all accountable to create an inclusive culture.
  • We’re committed to attracting diverse talent and hiring fairly.
  • We support flexible ways of working.
  • We’re committed to equal pay for equal work.
  • We have an obligation to champion diversity and inclusion in the community.

To ensure we stay true to our values, we have ahead of diversity, inclusion and community.

We’re championing diversity and inclusion by:

  • Creating an inclusive work environment
  • Committing to gender diversity at Xero
  • Encouraging more women to get into the tech sector
  • Using diverse channels to hire staff

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Everyone lives the company values - they aren't just something that's forgotten about once you're hired. Graduates get amazing support, there's heaps of potential to grow and it's a safe place to make mistakes and learn.
  • Everyone is extremely supportive. You can ask people outside of your team things you don't understand and they wouldn't bat an eye. The company itself is understanding of work-life balance and tries hard to present the best opportunities to its employees
  • It depends on the team but my experience has been generally really good. It doesn't feel like there is a massive hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork has been really good even in these trying covid lockdown times.
  • One of the best product companies to work for in Melbourne.
  • I don't pay much attention to how much I get paid but I feel like I get paid well. There's also a share based incentive scheme to encourage people to stay at Xero for longer which seems pretty cool. Graduates also go under a more frequent salary review process compared to the rest of the business because we generally have a greater "growth potential".
  • Its only been recent that the company is starting to put a lot more focus on designing systems in a more robust way. Some of the thinking in the past was to sort of "hack" things together until it worked (startup thinking). This means some of the systems you work on don't always make a lot of sense and require a great deal of understanding.
  • Generally very social and open to change. However, every team is different and every person is different. e.g. some teams have more "traditional" culture and processes, where some are more up-to-date.
  • Mixed experiences with different managers/team leads in different situations Some positive experiences: - candid - helpful - empathetic - effective at resolving team tension - feedback that I can use Some negative experiences: - left me feeling uncertain in an already difficult project - feedback that doesn't give me any direction
  • Maybe more structure - right now it is very up to the individual how / what they want to learn.

Our CEO recently gave a talk where he said the phrase “I don’t want a team of know-it-alls, I want a team of learn-it-alls”, which I think sums up what being a developer is all about.
